New Boats

With some successful fundraising, some incredibly generous donors, wonderful sponsors and some judicious use of existing resources, the Spring will see two new boats added to our fleet and two new operating bases bringing our number to five boats.

The existing Wetwheels Solent, our original boat, will be moving to Dover to become Wetwheels South East. She is currently in with boat builders Cheetah having some modifications made and should be commencing operational duties in April. Whilst it was sad to see her go (she has an amazing history), she will be replaced by a brand new, and almost identical, Wetwheels Solent currently being built at Cheetah. The new Wetwheels Solent will be on her new berth at Gunwharf in Portsmouth in early April.

Wetwheels Yorkshire commences build shortly ready for a May delivery to Whitby where she will be our first boat on the east coast. Needless to say, everyone is getting very excited. We must say a special thank you to Suzuki Marine, Cheetah Marine, Raymarine and our individual sponsors and donors (all will be mentioned in separate press announcements to follow), We have come a long way in only 6 years.

Trustees

The Wetwheels Foundation, the charity which overseas the growth and governance of Wetwheels boats and Operators, recently added five new trustees to the board, bringing their number to nine. With skills ranging from finance, the marine sector, legal, PR & marketing, we could not have a better, wiser and more committed group of trustees to oversee the organisation and our future growth. Price Increase

We are sorry to say but after keeping our costs the same for the past three years, we are going to have to make a small increase to our not-for-profit rates. The not-for-profit day rate for the boat has increased from £450 to £475 and our half-day rate from £350 to £375. We have unfortunately had to also increase our Pay & Play prices slightly too but our fishing trip prices will remain the same. For full details, please contact the office.

Out & About 2018

We have a busy summer schedule planned, including several Outreach visits.  In June we make the first of our Outreach projects to Poole in Dorset. For our farthest journey west yet, in July we will be visiting Plymouth in Devon and Falmouth in Cornwall before returning to the Solent and running our usual projects in Cowes for Cowes Week and Yarmouth in the IOW. Then, following last year’s successful Outreach trip, it’s a return voyage down to Eastbourne for a week followed by our usual stint at Southampton Boat Show towards the end of the season. In between, we will be busy with our usual array of bookings to keep us busy.

Get hooked!

Fancy catching your very own dinner..? Our fishing club was a great successlast year, we made 20 sea angling trips, a total of 120 anglers but we lost count of the number of fish. We work closely withour friends at Horizon fishing club in Portsmouth and we are always looking for new anglers. We are happy to provide the rods and bait, just bring your own sandwiches.

Calling all motorboat owners

On Sunday June 17th we are holding our inaugural Solent Safari, Treasure Hunt & Poker Run in conjunction with Wetwheels Hamble. It will not only be a fantastic day out on the water with like-minded boaters, it will help raise some much needed money for our local Solent based Wetwheels boats.  We took part in one of these a few years ago and it really was great fun, no need to go fast, just a really fun day out.

Wetwheels Maritime Adventures

WMA is a new and exciting project which will appeal to all of our existing participants and hopefully will open the door to many more new ones. For the past 18 months We have been working hard on this new project which was launched last week. WMA will be delivering fully guided tours of Portsmouth harbour and local coastline detailing all of the major points of interest and key historical sites.

This moves our traditional, experiential Wetwheels trips onto a new level and has been created, in part, as a result of feedback from many of the partners we work with who were asking for a learning element to the trips. But it was also created to celebrate Portsmouth’s magnificent heritage and explain how the harbour has evolved into the busy port it is today. From rat island to the point where 500 sailors lost their lives, from smelling the barnacles on a sea-fort to looking up at the bows of a cold-war submarine, plus many many more points of interest, everything will be explained in full.

Award

We were delighted to win a South East regional Federation of Small Business Award last week which means we now go through to the national final.

We are obviously delighted but could not have achieved what we do without the help from our team and of course from the support of you, our participants.
